Going Non-Toxic can sound overwhelming, but with a little time put into research and finding quality recommendations, you can begin to detox your home little by little and increase your efforts over time.

I’m sharing with you a bit about my journey so far, and the small changes we’ve made in some of the products in our home, to reduce the amount of harmful checmicals we’re consuming each day.

Harmful chemicals can cause the scariest of diseases, because they totally disrupt your hormone levels and other natural processes of the body. We consume so many harmful chemicals in the foods we eat, the things we drink, the products we use, and the air we breathe.

Something I always remind myself is that small efforts over time, can lead to big results. So if you start by making just one small change, and then later on you add another change, and another, over time you will have made many changes which will compound into large benefits to your health and the health of your family.

Non-Toxic Home Products

1. Laundry Detergent

One of the first changes we made was in our laundry detergent. We began using Mrs. Meyer’s Laundry Detergent in Lavender, and honestly, I love the way it smells. It’s very subtle yet more natural than other laundry detergents we were using.

However, I will admit, I know we can get a little more natrual than this since some of the ingredients claim to be natural but are not “fully natural” whatever that means.

I think I will take this a step further and next try Nellie’s Non-Toxic Vegan Powdered Laundry Detergent. I also heard that powder laundry detergent is better for your washing machine. Also, apparently, a lot of liquid laundry detergents have a high content of water…

I read that Nellies is formulated without SLS, SLES, gluten, phosphates, fragrance, and chlorine.

Once we run out of the Meyer’s I’ll definitely be turning the natural laundry detergent up a notch and giving this one a try!

2. Wool Dryer Balls

Dryer sheets have a super high content of harsh chemicals in them that can irritate the skin as well as disrupt hormones. That’s why some of the time we use the Grove Wool Dryer Balls and Purify Scent Oil. The wool dryer balls help to fluff your laundry around in a natural way, and if you dab a little of the purify scent oil on the dryer balls before throwing them in, your laundry will come out smelling amazing and fresh, in an all-natural way.

I will say the dryer balls aren’t the BEST at removing lint… which is why I don’t use them often on dark clothes. But when it comes to sheets, comforters, towels, whites, rugs, etc. I use the dryer balls.

Remember, even if you don’t make a change 100% even just 50% still can make a difference!

3. Essential Oils

We have an oil diffuser in our living room, which we use pretty much daily. However, I came to learn that the Fall Scented (Pumpkin Spice, Apple Cider, and Coffee Cake) “oils” that we got from Amazon are actually NOT so great for our health… they’re straight chemicals that we’re breathing in every day…

So I did some research and found that the best bet is essential oils, which are oils and scents derived from literal plants and nature. I’ve heard some of the most reliable (actually natural) brands are DoTerra, Young Living, and I also found one recently called Plant Therapy. They all claim to be organic, all-natural, etc.

BONUS: Essential oils not only smell great, and are natural, but they also have health benefits! Something like peppermint oil can help with headaches or keeping you awake and alert. Or Lavender oil can have calming and soothing effects.

If you’ve ever smelled the Anthropologie Capri Blue Volcano candle, you know it smells absolutely breathtaking. I found a little DIY recipe for that exact scent that you can make with essential oils. I just ordered the required oils, and am waiting to try the concoction. I’ll definitely let you know how it turns out! Here it is if you’d like to try:

5 drops lemon
5 drops lime
3 drops orange
2 drops grapefruit
2 drops northern lights black spruce
1 drop bergamot

If you try it let me know what you think in the comments!

4. Candles

To reiterate what I mentioned about the essential oils, the same goes with candles, however, candles are actually a little worse. Some candles use things like paraffin wax and artificial scents, and when these are burnt it’s literally categorized as carcinogens. Yes, you read it right. If you buy low-quality candles, you are releasing carcinogens in your home. That’s freakin scary.

We are candle OBSESSED, and burn them almost every day. So we were very sad about this news. This is what led me to make homemade candles, which turned out to be very easy by the way.

I learned that soy wax is a lot less harmful, and so are wood wicks. Wood wicks also burn slower and crackle as they burn so that’s a win-win. I also got all-natural scents from The Wooden Wick Co. so the wax we were burning and the scents were as natural as we could possibly get.

In addition, we tried to reduce the number of candles we light. We use to light them every single day because we loved how pretty and calming they looked and how they smelled so good. Now we use the oil diffuser for the smell, and use flameless candles for the “vibe.” We try to light candles occasionally now, and when we do, we use the all-natural ones.

Also, I believe the Capri Blue candles are soy wax and are pretty natural as well, so that’s great news!

Like I’ve said, the best thing is to start small and not over do it. Even just making one small change in your home can make a difference. You can make more and more changes over time as well.

cheers, alyssa
